"Make it work, then make it good"
This coding principle also applies to various aspects of building a company.

Provide value for $ as early as possible - everything else is a distraction.

I started my company with one post on FB.

How the company started:

Our team is the best. We’re small & bootstrapped, but we aim for a welcoming, inclusive environment for employees & students.

We’re very fortunate to have Lynda on the team 💜. She’s always helping students 1 on 1, which is tremendously helpful.

Got off a zoom meeting with a student. Hearing her laugh & say how much fun the meeting was, is everything to me. I get this sensational feeling like I am making a difference. We have so much to get done but my experience here at @debugacademy has been by far the best experience.
I build things I want to buy. I don’t do market validation beyond that.

Do you validate demand for your product before building it? If yes, would love to hear how.

I made it out 2 days in a row. AMA.

I don’t have time to ride daily w/teaching, consulting, product-building & family. Delayed some product work today.

But I plan to at least be more mindful of what i consume, go on meeting-walks, and bike a few times each week.

I’ve been working crazy hours for years & my health has suffered. Lately my 6 year old’s expressed concern about my weight a few times. ❤️ him.

What good is running a company if it takes away my ability to run with my kids?

I need to prioritize my health, too.

Student after calling w/code q’s:
“Thank you so much. I’m going to take classes from you every year. I added your company to our organization so that everyone can get approval for your trainings easily in the future.”

#buildInPublic

Treat people well. They’ll help you succeed
“The market believes winners can be much bigger but not necessary that there will be more winners” 🎯
IMO the market (most VCs) are wrong.

Easier than ever to #buildInPublic. More economical for more specialized niche #SaaS products. More winners.
A lot of people are misunderstanding this VC funding market

More money is flowing into market but the increase is not evenly distributed

The market believes winners can be much bigger but not necessary that there will be more winners

It’s still very hard for most to raise VC💰
#buildInPublic doing things that don’t scale:

- Unlimited 1:1 meetings w/students
- No late fees/interest
- Handle sales calls myself
- Teach classes myself
- Unmatched flexibility w/payments
- Scholarships
- Hiring junior employees
- Training all employees

That led to..
Each student's gaps are different. This is where mass-produced courses can be weaker.

Filling in gaps via pull request reviews has been extremely effective.

As an example, I just left these comments on a student's assignment.

Before writing our first line of code, we’re doing some ux research.

Not seeing anything exactly like what we have in mind.

Building the payment tool I’ve been wanting for my courses conferences.

Get ready to earn more sales, ethically.

#buildInPublic
I just hit 500 followers.

Modest compared to many, but I do believe opportunities multiply.

Looking forward to continued growth and increased opportunities for all of us.

Hiring a new team member for @DebugAcademy this wk

Training is part-time in nature. So our team members can rotate working on our SaaS idea when we aren't training (or working on contracts).

Our training+contract work enables building while remaining profitable

#buildInPublic
I often see #SaaS #startups #buildinpublic by sharing revenue, but not much else.

I plan to actually build in public.

1. My career-changing #webdev #drupal #reactjs company @DebugAcademy
2. SaaS product for selling products effectively & ethically
