In this thread, watch me do MARKETING IN PUBLIC!

This year, I will not just build stuff, I will be a better marketer! And in full Indie Hacking spirit, I'm taking you along for the ride.

A little @notionreads behind the scenes... πŸ‘‡πŸΌ
#buildinpublic
TIL that without paying for npm, it's really hard to use private packages in your Google cloud function deployments...

#buildinpublic
@LoganBrownSWS Yes, in the best case it includes honestly sharing setbacks, too. It's what I like so much about the #buildinpublic movement here on Twitter
Software projects are never done.

I'm getting very close to being finished with what I wanted to build for the new backend for @readbetterio πŸ™ŒπŸ»

But I won't be fooled - feeling like I'm 80% there probably only means the next 20 are going to be the hardest πŸ™ƒ

#buildinpublic
Made a bunch of progress on the @readbetterio update this morning.

Things that are seemingly simple, but make the experience a lot better:

- auto-detect a newsletter author's name from the mail body
- auto-convert embedded tweets in all kinds of mail formats

#buildinpublic
Readbetter is my first project where 90% of the magic happens in the backend.

That's the only reason why I was able to get away with the design looking like this so far πŸ™ƒ

I promise it will be more beautiful with the coming update!
#buildinpublic
Creating my own dev-tools for @readbetter

Built a virtual Kindle so I can better debug how different newsletter formats are parsed!

Sales for @notionreads have slowed down.

Here's my analysis of what might be factors:

➝ Tweeted less in general and less about the project (⬇️ fewer profile clicks ➝ ⬇️ intentional traffic)

➝ price increase to $44 - was $39 the price sweet spot?

#buildinpublic
Alright, already falling in love with my new UI workflow 😍

Literally took only 5 minutes to build a custom Twitter Testimonial from the TailwindUI example.

(And yes, those are real tweets about @readbetterio!)

#buildinpublic
First steps of giving @readbetterio a much-needed refresh. Far from the end-result but wanted to share the progress.

TailwindUI makes it so fast to put something decent together!

#buildinpublic
πŸŽ‰ NotionReads reached the final stage of discounted pricing - 5 more sales and I will set it at its final price of $49

Have you tried a tiered discount strategy like this?

#buildinpublic
A big reason for me in building projects like @notionreads is experimenting with different platforms to gather learnings for future projects.

My newest experiment: Submitting NotionReads to AppSumo!

Excited to see if it's going to be worth it - will share here!

Nothing I love more than this feeling:

When the strings of an idea that you've had for months start arranging into a thread that you can pull on.

I think I'm headed in the right direction!

#buildinpublic
a) Always thank people that give you a rating.

b) Always ask for feedback (especially if it's not a 5/5).

Sent an update mail about @readbetterio yesterday.

In the P.S. I wrote a note about my new product NotionReads.

In the past 20 hours:
- 41% open rate (380 opens)
- 3.9% click rate (only one link - 36 unique clicks)
- 2 sales for a total of $58

What I sent:

A little bit of physical #buildinpublic content for a change πŸ˜ƒ

Renovating the home office!
I truly love the internet ❀️

Posted about NotionReads on Reddit - a user notified me of a potential bug.

He was right. Fixed the bug in 2 minutes. Probably wouldn't have figured this out on my own.

That's why you should #buildinpublic and launch before everything is perfect!
Launched NotionReads 1h ago - 50 views and 0 sales so far and my monkey brain πŸ™‰ is already starting to rattle:

"Maybe the price is too high?"...

So this is a public post to myself to calm down and wait for actual traffic to evaluate this πŸ˜…

Saturday morning - putting some finishing touches on the MVP of my Notion Book Tracker. Dealing with some image loading issues in Safari…

What are you working on today?

I just posted a long thread documenting my #learninpublic and #buildinpublic journey over the last month!
One month ago, I set out on a journey.

The goal: Learn new skills in public

--> Figma
--> Next.js
--> SEO

Because I learn best by doing, I built a little project.

With @bookshareso now live - here comes the debrief, including all processes and tools I used along the way:
